Let me begin by saying this post will not say anything at all about the content of the first episode of Season 8 of Game of Thrones. Because I:
It will however tell you everything about attending the premier itself. Neal and I are big Game of Thrones fans. Because Neal works at HBO, we sometimes get cool perks. Getting to attend the world premier is one of them!
Game of Thrones Mania
Game of Thrones has been doing a lot of promotional stuff lately. If you’ve been following it at all, you know they hid a bunch of iron thrones all over the world. One was found right here in Queens! They now have a giant throne in Rockefeller Center.
Apparently it is so big and difficult, they are taking it down tomorrow morning. In other words, it’s pretty friggin’ cool.
What To Wear
Anyway, when I realized this morning that we were attending the world premier of Game of Thrones, I had to figure out what to wear. I went with a simple black dress, sweater tights & heels. I had a plan to get my hair and makeup did, but it didn’t happen. Instead, I got my nails did.
I went with a spring color because it’s spring!! Neal wore a great suit that can look casual or business. Other people there ranged from jeans to ball gowns.
Getting There – Radio City Music Hall
The premier was held at Radio City Music Hall and a red carpet was on the other side of Rockefeller Center. When we got to Rock Center, there were about a billion people. We had to go through 30 Rock and out a side door to get in line for the show.
The line moved more quickly than we thought! Along the way there were lots of screens advertising the premier. We snapped a few selfies!
Inside Radio City
We have been to Radio City Music Hall for events before–most memorably, to see the Decemberists. It’s a beautiful theater. When we got in, there were people everywhere. They were giving out free popcorn and water, but weren’t selling any other food/drinks.
We made our way to the mezzanine–not the best seats, but they were given out randomly. Some of Neal’s coworkers got great orchestra seats. Our seats weren’t bad by any means (not sure there’s a bad seat in Radio City), but we were pretty far up. You can see the whole theater from there, though, and it’s really pretty.
The lighting wasn’t great, so the camera captured each shot slightly differently. We sat in the theater for about an hour before some very high ups made their remarks and introduced the cast.
The cast was all there–John Snow, Dany, Sanza, Arya, Bran, Tyrion, the Mountain, Khal Drogo, Brianne, Geoffery, etc.etc. They all came, but they really just got on stage and bowed several times. It wasn’t clear whether they joined us in the crowd, though a lot of people did come from backstage when the show finally started.
We watched the episode (it was great), then everyone who was anyone went to the after party. We’re nobody, so we hopped on the E Train 🙂
We hope you enjoyed our story! It’s part of our A Day in the Life series where we chronicle our days and give folks an idea of what locals in NYC do to have fun. We’re always looking for new things to do and share!
